How To Style This Pocket Square

When it comes to creating visual interest through texture contrast, few options surpass the pairing of a stately wool pocket square with a refined silk tie. After building up a collection of classic linen and silk pocket squares, wool varieties are the ideal way to expand your wardrobe with an unexpected twist.

Wool pocket squares, thanks to their unexpected texture and stately drape, are an exceptional way to upgrade your outfit in an unexpected way, as wool accessories are relatively rare in contemporary menswear, and serve, therefore, as a marker of finesse, taste, and a firm grasp of the conventions of Classic Style.

Selection of Handmade Fort Belvedere Wool Challis Pocket Squares

Sunny Yellow and Vibrant Red

This pocket square is like a good vibe in your lapel pocket, as its bright marigold yellow and dazzling brick red polka dots are sure to brighten your mood and the mood of everyone who sees you.

The size and density of these polka dots have been selected precisely to ensure the widest possible range of dress codes for which this pocket square is acceptable. Although its bright colors are more suited to casual day ensembles, it is possible to tone this pocket square down, if desired, by putting it alongside tonally similar warm colors that are more muted.

This pocket square will pair beautifully with jackets in any color, although it will pop especially nicely against gray, blue, or lighter brown suits; opt for darker colors for a more high contrast effect.

When selecting accessories, colors like navy blue, cream, charcoal gray, teal, olive green, imperial purple, rust orange, dusty pink, and burgundy will harmonize naturally with the marigold yellow body of this pocket square. Consider accessories, like neckwear or socks, that feature these colors.

Sensationally Soft Wool Challis

First popularized in the 19th century, the fine hand and muted colors of wool challis has made it a hit with stylish gentlemen ever since! The term challis is derived from the Anglo-Indian word "Shalee", which means soft. When this soft fabric was first introduced in Norwich, England in 1832, it was an immediate hit and quickly became a preferred fabric of the upper classes.

Today, wool challis is worn with both warm and cool weather ensembles and is a great alternative to madder silk or jacquard. Bright and bold colors add pop to casual outfits, while more sedate colors and patterns are perfectly acceptable as part of more formal business wear.

Care

Cleaning

Wool challis pocket squares should not be washed immersed in water as doing so can ruin the texture and color of the fabric. Instead, spot clean your pocket square using the following steps.

Gently blot any excess substance from the stain with a soft, dry cloth. Do not rub as this can damage the fabric.

Fill a small bowl with lukewarm water and add a few drops of mild detergent specifically designed for wool, such as Woolite.

Dip a corner of a clean, white cloth into the solution and test it on a hidden area of the pocket square to ensure it doesn't cause discoloration.

If the test is successful, lightly dab the stained area with the dampened cloth. Use a gentle tapping motion and do not saturate the fabric.

Moisten another clean cloth with plain lukewarm water and gently dab the area to remove any soap residue. Pat the cleaned area with a dry cloth to absorb moisture, then leave the pocket square laid flat on a towel to air dry completely.

If the stain does not respond to the these steps, take the pocket square to a professional dry cleaner experienced in handling delicate accessories.

Storage

Generally, wool should resist wrinkling if you take care to remove your pocket square after use and store it, loosely folded, flat.

If your wool pocket square should become wrinkled, iron it with the printed side facing down and the reverse covered by a cotton or linen cloth. Iron on medium to low heat with steam, or lightly sprinkle the surface with water.

Be sure to only iron the center of the pocket square and do not run your iron over the edges, as it could ruin the effect of the hand-rolled edges by flattening them.

Details & Specs

Yellow Wool Challis Pocket Square with Burgundy Red Polka Dots in Corwn Fold & Tweed by Fort Belvedere
  • Hand-Printed Wool Challis

Traditionally, wool challis fabric was hand-block printed, a labor-intensive process that is not economically feasible today. Instead, modern wool challis fabrics are screen printed. To capture the best of the old and the new methods, Fort Belvedere accessories are screen printed by hand, lending the production process an Old-World charm.

  • Decadent Wool Challis Fabric

Sourced from a heritage mill in England, this accessory is made from 100% wool challis. First popularized in the early 19th century, wool challis is a type of fabric that, despite being woven, has a soft and smooth texture. Its colors tend to be rich yet subdued, as opposed to vivid hues. While it is crafted from wool, challis distinguishes itself from the denser, heavier types of woolen textiles with its extremely plush and gentle hand.

  • Perfectly Sized for Wool

This pocket square has been cut to the exact dimensions necessary to ensure that it sits beautifully in your pocket and doesn't wilt down or bulge up. Most pocket squares are sized to provide the biggest yield from the starting fabric, but at Fort Belvedere, all of our pocket squares are cut to account for the natural properties of the fabric from which they are made.

  • Dynamic Polka Dot Pattern

Polka dots have endured as a common pattern in Classic Menswear for centuries because they add a touch of personality and style without being overwhelming. The consistent, evenly spaced dots provide a subtle yet sophisticated visual interest that can easily be paired with other pieces in a man's wardrobe.

  • Meticulously Hand-Rolled Edges

Although an expensive and time-consuming process, the edges of this Fort Belvedere pocket squares have been rolled by hand to ensure a neat and sophisticated look, in contrast to machine-made edges that are obviously so flat and regimented that they appear cheap. This edge treatment also improves the durability and longevity of the pocket square as it reinforces the areas of most regular wear and tear.

  • Fine Wrinkle-Resistant Merino Wool

The Merino breed of sheep offers up wool that is finer and softer than that of any other sheep, so, of course, it was the only option for Fort Belvedere’s line of wool pocket squares. Wool is renowned for being extremely wrinkle-resistant, and as such this pocket square provides a beautiful, crisp drape that is perfect for more unusual and dramatic pocket square folds.
