Why Neats are Neat

Macclesfield Neats, with their distinctive, small geometric patterns, are a staple in classic menswear due to their versatility and understated elegance. Originating from the town of Macclesfield in England, which was renowned for silk weaving, these ties can effortlessly complement various suit and shirt combinations without overwhelming the ensemble. The neat patterns typically involve repeating motifs that provide visual interest yet remain subtle enough for formal settings. Furthermore, Macclesfield neats often come in silk, adding a touch of luxury and a smooth texture that pairs well with the woolen fabrics commonly used in suits. Their wide range of colors also ensures that they can be matched with different outfits, increasing their utility in a man's wardrobe. The combination of historical significance, functionality, and aesthetic appeal continues to make Macclesfield neats a timeless choice in gentlemen's attire.

Wool Challis Micropattern Ties Mohair Blue - Fort Belvedere

Nautical Geometry with Wool Challis

The versatility of wool challis is beautifully showcased in this tie, which is light enough for various seasons yet particularly apt for the brisker days. This navy blue tie is adorned with a discreet geometric pattern, offering a sophisticated nod to classic style while maintaining a modern edge.

To create an outfit that allows this tie to take center stage, start with a crisp white or light blue dress shirt. A suit in shades of grey or black would provide a sharp contrast, highlighting the navy blue and allowing the geometric details to pop.

For those who prefer a more relaxed yet stylish look, consider pairing the tie with a camel or sand-colored sports coat. This lighter palette complements the navy blue and keeps the overall appearance fresh and contemporary.

When choosing trousers, opt for a pair of dark denim jeans or slate grey slacks to maintain a cohesive and polished aesthetic.

Accessorizing with a pocket square enhances the ensemble; select one that features hints of silver or pale blue to subtly echo the tie's geometric pattern.

This wool challis tie is a perfect choice for those cooler months, bringing a touch of understated elegance to both formal and casual occasions.

Care

Cleaning

Wool challis neckwear should not be washed immersed in water as doing so can ruin the texture and color of the fabric. Instead, spot clean your neckwear using the following steps.

Gently blot any excess substance from the stain with a soft, dry cloth. Do not rub as this can damage the fabric.

Fill a small bowl with lukewarm water and add a few drops of mild detergent specifically designed for wool, such as Woolite.

Dip a corner of a clean, white cloth into the solution and test it on a hidden area of the neckwear to ensure it doesn't cause discoloration.

If the test is successful, lightly dab the stained area with the dampened cloth. Use a gentle tapping motion and do not saturate the fabric.

Moisten another clean cloth with plain lukewarm water and gently dab the area to remove any soap residue. Pat the cleaned area with a dry cloth to absorb moisture, then leave the neckwear laid flat on a towel to air dry completely.

If the stain does not respond to the these steps, take the neckwear to a professional dry cleaner experienced in handling delicate accessories.

Storage

To prevent heavy creasing, never store your neckwear tied or knotted.

Undo the knot and then roll the necktie up in a firm but not excessively tight coil.

Allow it to sit in the coil for about a day to relax wrinkles.

To prevent wrinkles, store your neckwear hanging, flat, or in a very loose roll.

Assorted Handmade Fort Belvedere Bow Ties with pointed ends

Sensationally Soft Wool Challis

First popularized in the 19th century, the fine hand and muted colors of wool challis has made it a hit with stylish gentlemen ever since! The term challis is derived from the Anglo-Indian word "Shalee", which means soft. When this soft fabric was first introduced in Norwich, England in 1832, it was an immediate hit and quickly became a preferred fabric of the upper classes.

Today, wool challis is worn with both warm and cool weather ensembles and is a great alternative to madder silk or jacquard. Bright and bold colors add pop to casual outfits, while more sedate colors and patterns are perfectly acceptable as part of more formal business wear.

Sized To Fit You

Almost all retailers sell their ties as one-size-fits-all. A handful offer neckties that are either longer or shorter. At Fort Belvedere, we cater to the needs of every man, whether of modest, average, or above-average height, which is why we are proud to offer neckties in three distinct sizes.

The dimensions of our neckties are proportional to your height.

SHORT: For those who are 5’8” or 173 cm or shorter.

REGULAR: For those between 5'9" or 175 cm and 6'2" or 188 cm.

LONG: For those who are 6’3” or 190 cm or taller.

If you prefer to wear trousers with a higher rise and are in-between sizes, it may be better to size down so that the necktie does not fall below your waistband when tied.

Available Self-Tipped or Untipped

Based on size, some of our ties are Self-Tipped or Untipped.

Self-tipped ties have a lining as part of their tips. The overwhelming majority of tie makers use a less expensive fabric for the tip in a bid to save money, but doing so compromises on the look and the functionality of the tie. All self-tipped Fort Belvedere ties feature a generous piece of lining in the same fabric as the tie’s body for a consistent, quality-made look and feel that is in keeping with traditional self-tipped tie construction.

Fort Belvedere also offers untipped ties in which the tips are carefully hand-rolled for a beautiful look and secure finish that requires more skill to achieve than a self-tipped tie. Because they have less fabric, untipped ties are also lighter. Untipped ties were very popular in the 1930s, and as a tribute to the styling conventions of that era, Fort Belvedere untipped ties have a vintage flared end.

  • Timeless Macclesfield Neats Pattern

A Macclesfield Neats pattern is a classic and refined textile design characterized by its small, intricate geometric shapes, often resembling tiny flowers or neat dots. This pattern is traditionally associated with men's silk ties and is named after the town of Macclesfield in England, which was once a hub for silk weaving. The Macclesfield Neats pattern exudes sophistication and is a timeless choice for formal attire, adding a touch of elegance and understated flair to any outfit.

  • Decadent Wool Challis Fabric

Sourced from a heritage mill in England, this accessory is made from 100% wool challis. First popularized in the early 19th century, wool challis is a type of fabric that, despite being woven, has a soft and smooth texture. Its colors tend to be rich yet subdued, as opposed to vivid hues. While it is crafted from wool, challis distinguishes itself from the denser, heavier types of woolen textiles with its extremely plush and gentle hand.

  • Hand-Printed Wool Challis

Traditionally, wool challis fabric was hand-block printed, a labor-intensive process that is not economically feasible today. Instead, modern wool challis fabrics are screen printed. To capture the best of the old and the new methods, Fort Belvedere accessories are screen printed by hand, lending the production process an Old-World charm.

  • Handmade

Fort Belvedere ties are entirely sewn by hand, which gives them improved flexibility and designs that are functional as well as beautiful. This careful oversight allows us to offer exceptional products typified by the standards of Old World construction.

  • 3-Fold Construction

Many ties are made with an unlined 6- or 7-fold construction that is soft and flimsy, causing lank, unappealing knots and a wrinkled tie. Fort Belvedere neckties are 3-fold constructed with a simple wool interlining, improving the overall structure and drape of the tie while allowing for fantastic knots. The discerning eye may notice the lining visible through the open pores, creating the impression of a solid tie with a sophisticated twist that will impress genuine clothing aficionados.

  • Signature 3-Ply Silk Yarn

Fort Belvedere uses sturdy 3-ply silk yarn in the hand sewing of our neckties, which gives the neckties improved wear and longevity. The thickness of the yarn makes the entire product more durable but thanks to the lightness of the material, no bulk is added.

  • Available Tipped or Untipped

  • Perfectly Sized Ties

On formal occasions, every detail must be exactly correct, and this applies as well to the length of your neckwear. This necktie is available in three different sizes so that you can pick the necktie that is perfectly proportioned to you.
