These are without a doubt the best pair of gloves I have ever worn and quite frankly I think this single experience will wreck every other glove I wear in the future. The material is top of the line, the hand stitching is of great quality, pretty much everything about them is fantastic.

Dress Day Glove Etiquette

Dress gloves can be worn at any time of the year in any setting. In warmer months, consider purchasing unlined gloves so that your hands do not become overheated.

Day dress gloves were traditionally worn in a wide array of colors in addition to traditional leather tones. Popular options included light gray, green, yellow, petrol blue, and even orange.

Always take your gloves off before shaking hands. In a formal setting or upon entering someone’s home, you should remove your gloves.

When indoors, remove your gloves if you are eating, drinking, or smoking. It is considered polite to remove your gloves before handling anything that might be soiled by them, like food or paper.

When not wearing your gloves, never stuff them into your pockets as this can look sloppy. Instead, lay them flatly together, one on top of the other, and hold them or place them beside you on a flat surface.

Refined British Racing Green

You'll be off to the races in these elegant unlined gloves made from fine peccary leather in a stately British racing green. Perfect for transitional seasons, these gloves will pair effortlessly with everything in your wardrobe and transform you into a stylish sensation.

Thanks to the earthy green tone of these gloves, they will beautifully set off all of the common colors for jackets, topcoats, and overcoats, including tan, camel, brown, charcoal gray, and navy.

When it comes to colors for accessories that will set off these gloves, consider ivory, tan, warm grays, burgundy, maroon, navy blue, mustard yellow, and dark brown. Emphasizing these colors in your socks, boutonniere, scarf, neckwear, or pocket square will help tie together your entire ensemble.

The King of Glove Leather

It is with no hesitation that we hail leather made from the peccary, a pig-like ungulate from South America, as the best material from which to make men's dress gloves. This primacy is due to the distinctive qualities of peccary leather. It is especially known for its high durability, which makes it perfect for gloves that are meant to withstand regular use. Its fibrous structure gives it a superior resistance to wear and tear compared to other leathers.

Despite being durable, peccary leather is exceptionally soft to the touch, providing a luxurious feel. This enhances the comfort level for the wearer, making it an exquisite choice for high-end gloves. The leather's pliability allows for ease of movement, which is crucial for hand dexterity in gloves. It molds well to the hands over time, creating a custom fit. Peccary leather also has natural breathability, which helps in reducing hand perspiration and maintaining comfort over long periods of wear.

True peccary leather possesses a distinctive grainy texture that not only contributes to its aesthetic appeal but also provides a good grip even in wet or slippery conditions. Gloves made from peccary leather have a luxurious and elegant look, often featuring beautiful natural shades that contribute to their visual appeal. Because peccary leather comes from a wild animal found only in South America, its rarity adds to the exclusivity and desirability of gloves made from it.

When properly cared for, peccary leather gloves can last many years, becoming softer and more comfortable with age, representing a worthy investment.

What's your glove size?

To determine your glove size, simply measure your dominant hand around the fullest section of the palm.

As implied by the expression “to fit like a glove,” dress gloves were traditionally worn with a relatively tight fit to appear as trim and elegant as possible. Therefore, if you are in-between sizes, we generally recommend sizing down: as the leather stretches, it will conform perfectly to your hand’s dimensions.

Leather Maintenance

All leathers employed by Fort Belvedere have been carefully sourced and tanned for longevity and durability, but there are simple steps that you can take to keep your gloves looking their best and feeling as comfortable as possible for years to come.

Cleaning

If a portion of your gloves gets wet, it may develop water stains. If an area of your gloves is darker than the rest after getting wet and then drying, wet the entire glove with clean water and then allow it to air dry for several days. The gloves will then be returned to their uniform appearance.

In most cases, your gloves can be washed with just clean water. If you want to use a cleanser, we suggest a dedicated glove-leather cleaner or a very mild product like baby soap or shampoo. Never use artificial cleaners.

Never wring your gloves dry. Instead, lay the gloves flat with the fingers extended on a towel and layer another towel on top to remove excess water. Then, air dry the gloves for a few days, keeping them clear of artificial heat sources like a radiator, hair dryers, and the like, because they could discolor or damage the leather.

Note that after cleaning, your gloves may feel slightly stiff. Simply wear them regularly to break them back in and they shall return to their previous softness.

Storage

After wearing your gloves, store them flat with the fingers stretched out. Never leave your gloves balled up or crumpled.

What makes these unlined peccary gloves from Fort Belvedere so special?

Gloves have distinguished gentlemen for centuries, and during the Golden Age of Menswear, these gloves were traditionally colorful and were utilized to add pop and visual interest to one’s outfit. Unfortunately, these vibrant gloves have all but disappeared, being replaced by plain, boring gloves in a smattering of commonplace colors.

During the 20s, 30s, 40s, and even 50s, however, no well-dressed gentleman of style would have contented himself with plain gloves in quotidian shades like dull black, ashy grey, or boring brown. Instead, he would have worn gloves in vibrant beige, scintillating yellow, deep green, bright blue, bold grey, and warm brown, and his gloves would have fine detailing that denoted quality, such as individualized sizing, a button closure, and hand-stitching.

At Fort Belvedere, we are happy to counter the downward trend of modern gloves with a revival of what made classically stylish gloves great. This pair of peccary gloves is a perfect example of an elegant dress glove that combines functional fit, artisanal craftsmanship, innovative materials, and comfort for the ultimate glove experience.

During the Classic Age of Menswear, day gloves were not seasonal and were worn year-round. During warmer months, gentlemen wore refined, unlined gloves that looked especially neat and trim. Although hard to find at other retailers, Fort Belvedere is proud to offer an extensive line of unlined day gloves in many gorgeous colors that are suitable for a variety of formalities.

Details & Specs

Chamois Yellow Peccary Mens Dress Gloves Hydropeccary handsewn with button closure by Fort Belvedere
  • The King of Glove Leathers

Peccary leather has long been praised as the best leather for gloves due to its extraordinary characteristics: it is durable and tough while also being soft and supple. In fact, peccary leather is so tough that it can be resewn again and again without destroying the leather under normal use conditions. But, peccary leather is also unbelievably soft, and as you wear these gloves, they will only grow softer and more supple with age.

  • Sustainably Harvested

Peccaries, distant cousins of the pig family, thrive in the Americas, but the best peccary skins come from Peru. Fort Belvedere sources our peccary leather from this nation, ensuring that it is harvested according to the ethical and sustainable standards of The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, or CITES. Peccary leather is easily identified by its characteristic 3-prong pores, and wild peccary is characterized by the scuffs and marks that the animal naturally acquired in life. These unique identifiers should not be viewed as defects but as hallmarks of the leather’s quality and wild origin.

  • Artisanal Tanning

After harvesting, these gloves were tanned by a family-owned company of German craftsmen who have been tanning exceptional leather with over a century’s worth of experience. The leather for these gloves was drum-dyed in order to retain the material’s natural softness, look, and feel, with proprietary additives to make the leather as exceptional as possible.

  • Water-Resistant HydroPeccary™

Peccary leather is naturally water resistant, but we wanted to take the next step and make our gloves even more resistant to dampness, stains, and damage from fluids, whether rain, snow, ice, coffee, or even wine! Therefore, during the tanning process, we have included certain additives that improve the leather’s ability to repel liquids, creating what we like to call HydroPeccary™. Obviously, these gloves are not rubber kitchen gloves and so are not completely waterproof, but thanks to our special HydroPeccary™ treatments and our exceptionally tight stitches, your hands should not get wet during normal wear conditions. And, best of all, this treatment does not compromise the unbelievable softness that characterizes peccary leather.

  • Hand-Cut One-Piece Construction

Because peccary skins are harvested from the wild, they can only be properly handled by master cutters who have the knowledge and skill to maximize yields from skins that naturally have holes and scars that the peccary acquired in life. We are proud to work with Hungarian master cutters with almost 40 years of experience in hand-cutting quality gloves.

In this artisanal process, which is truly a dying art, the skins are first carefully dampened and then powdered so that they are more pliable and easier to stretch. The master cutter then examines the skin and devises a plan of action to cut the skin for the best possible yield.

Because Fort Belvedere sources only the highest-grade peccary leather, the cutters are able to assemble the pieces from a single piece of peccary skin, minimizing the number of seams required. This attentive process gives Fort Belvedere gloves exceptional stretch and an unparalleled fit, all thanks to the skill and ability of our gifted cutters.

  • Unlined for Coolness

Although now associated most often with the colder weather, dress gloves were, historically, worn in all seasons, even when it was warm or hot. Therefore, gentlemen maintained a collection of unlined, highly breathable gloves that they could don in late spring, early fall, or even the summer. These lighter weight gloves are also ideal during mild winters.

  • Quirks for Mobility

To increase the range of finger movement, the best glove makers add triangular segments of leather between the fingers that are called quirks. Quirks are a hallmark of superior craftsmanship and their inclusion is always indicative of exceptional product design. We like to make these quirks contrast-colored for an unexpected pop of color that highlights this unique glove feature.

  • Elegant Fourchette Detailing

Dynamic diagonal lines, known as fourchettes, have been a traditional decoration on the backs of men's gloves for centuries. Imparting a strong sense of movement and action, our fourchettes are hand sewn and subtly create visual interest that sets you apart as a connoisseur of glove-making.

  • Traditional Button Closure

To ensure a good seal at the throat and a close fit overall, gloves historically featured a button closure at the wrist. As a cost-saving measure, this functionality has practically disappeared, but at Fort Belvedere, we are proud to reintroduce this important feature. Wrapped in leather, our button closure ensures that the glove sits tightly on the wrist so it lies neatly under your sleeve. For a dash of sprezzatura charm, however, you can leave your gloves nonchalantly unbuttoned for a more rakish appearance.

  • Hand-Sewn Gloves

Sewn by Hungarian artisans who can only be described as glove-making virtuosos, these gloves are truly a work of art. Each pair takes hours to complete, and the clear pride that our craftsmen feel in their work is evident from the attentive detail that they lavish on every step of the sewing process.
