How to Style this Pocket Square

The decadent beauty of genuine ancient madder is put on full display with any pocket square fold thanks to the heavy weight of silk employed in the making of this accessory. Accordingly, you have free range to select a fold that highlights whichever portion of the pocket square you desire.

A simple fold that emphasizes the edges, like a banker's fold, will showcase the intricate organic beauty of the paisley edge detailing. A puff fold, conversely, will contrast the soft folds of the puff with the orderly diamond pattern. To achieve the best of both worlds, consider an upside-down puff, which highlights both types of patterns at the same time to illustrate the elegance of multiple patterns.

Dark Brown Madder Silk Pocket Square with Navy Bronze Green Diamond Motif and Paisley- Fort Belvedere

Paisley and Diamonds in Beautiful Earth Tones

The richly subtle tones of genuine ancient madder silk are the perfect medium for conveying shades of color that shine precisely because they are understated. As such, there are few colorways more suited to ancient madder dye than a warm-toned purple with forest greens and rusty reds in the diamond and paisley detailing.

This pocket square can be worn with jackets of any color, although it is ideally suited to more colors dark brown and a classic navy blazer.

For your accessories, gold or silver with subtle design cufflinks, a high-quality leather belt in a matching shade to your shoes will ensure a cohesive appearance. Brown or oxblood are good choices and make your entire ensemble pop.

An Ancient Dye of Historic Beauty

Madder silk is a mesmerizing and lustrous textile that has been held in high regard throughout the annals of time for its intensely rich hues. The name "madder" is derived from the Rubia tinctorum plant, also known as common madder or dyer's madder, which is the source of its natural and vibrant dyes.

Traditionally, natural madder root was renowned for yielding primarily red pigments; however, the evolution of modern dyeing techniques has expanded this spectrum to embrace a panopony of deep, saturated tones. Envision shades such as mustard yellow, forest green, burnt orange, profound blues and violets—and naturally, the classic reds and burgundies.

The very finest madder products, such as those we offer, are renowned for their unique texture and sheen, having been printed on twill silk fabric treated with gum arabic, conferring on them a distinct, matte finish known among connoisseurs as a "chalk hand."

Today, the artisans dedicated to crafting madder fabric might be fewer than in days past, yet select purveyors continue to uphold this sartorial tradition. The creation of madder silk is an intricate and labor-intensive art, entailing numerous stages of screen printing and necessitating only the finest quality silk. With a commitment to excellence, Fort Belvedere sources its revered ancient madder exclusively from England.

Care

Cleaning

Silk and blended silk neckwear should not be washed immersed in water as doing so can ruin the texture and color of the silk. Instead, spot clean your neckwear using the following steps.

Gently blot any excess stain with a soft, dry cloth. Do not rub as this can damage the fabric.

Fill a small bowl with lukewarm water and add a few drops of mild detergent specifically designed for silk.

Dip a corner of a clean, white cloth into the solution and test it on a hidden area of the tie to ensure it doesn't cause discoloration.

If the test is successful, lightly dab the stained area with the dampened cloth. Use a gentle tapping motion and do not saturate the silk.

Moisten another clean cloth with plain lukewarm water and gently dab the area to remove any soap residue.

Pat the cleaned area with a dry cloth to absorb moisture, then leave the tie laid flat on a towel to air dry completely.

If the stain does not respond to the these steps, take the neckwear to a professional dry cleaner experienced in handling delicate garments.

Storage

To prevent heavy creasing, never store your neckwear tied or knotted.

Undo the knot and then roll the necktie up in a firm but not excessively tight coil.

Allow it to sit in the coil for about a day to relax wrinkles.

To prevent wrinkles, store your silk neckwear hanging, flat, or in a very loose roll.

Details & Specs

Dark Brown Madder Silk Pocket Square with Navy Bronze Green Diamond Motif and Paisley- Fort Belvedere
  • Versatile Diamond and Paisley Motif

This pocket square combines a body decorated with intricate diamonds with border detailing of decadent paisley. The result is a pattern that combines orderly regimented elements with creative organic elements for the best of both worlds. Because this pocket square features two very distinct types of patterns, it creates sufficient contrast to allow for employing an even wider range of pattern types in your garments and other accessories.

  • Real Ancient Madder

Because of the complicated and expensive processes involved, only a handful of silk printers offer real ancient madder. Fort Belvedere has located such a maker in England, the home of artisanal real ancient madder production. To illustrate how complex and complicated this process is, consider the following: to dye with madder, the natural white base cloth must be outlined with a pattern and highlight colors applied only in the desired areas. Once the pattern printing is complete, the fabric is immersed in an indigo bath, staining the uncolored areas to the desired madder shade.

  • Unique Chalky Feel

In addition to its rich and deep colors, real madder is also typified by its distinctive, chalky feel. Extremely pleasing to the touch, this unique texture and the elegant drape it imparts are achieved by restoring to the silk fabric the natural gum that was stripped away during the production process. The result is one-of-a-kind silk that feels as good as it looks.

  • Three-in-One Styling Options

Because this pocket square has two discreet patterns, it offers three unique styling options based on the utilized fold: you can display all of one section or the other in a shell or banker’s square fold or a combination of both with an inverted fold-like the upside-down puff fold. The result? A single pocket square that can be styled like three different pocket squares.

  • Perfectly Sized for Silk

The vast majority of pocket squares are sized to get the largest number of pocket squares per yard of fabric. By not considering the unique qualities of the material as related to weight and weave, however, these accessories cannot function well as pocket squares.

Most silk pocket squares are 30 cm x 30 cm, or 12” x 12.” This size is dictated by the desire to save money, and the resulting pocket square is simply too small, because without added structure the smooth surface of silk will easily slip down and disappear into your pocket.

By paying special attention to the unique qualities of our silk, we were able to engineer a pocket square that functions perfectly. After extensive testing, we concluded that 40 cm x 40 cm or 15.5" x" 15.5" was the perfect size for our silk pocket squares.

  • Heavy Weight Silk for Improved Drape

The weight and weave of the fabric dictate its quality and function, and this unique pocket square has been woven with a heavier-weight fabric to ensure the perfect drape without compromising its soft feel. As a result, it will sit neatly in the breast pocket without collapsing and vanishing.

  • Stunning Hand-Printed Colors

When printing pocket squares, it is necessary to reprint the entire pocket as many times as there are colors, adding each color as a distinct layer with each printing. Obviously, multiple printings allow for the possibility of errors or mistakes, necessitating exacting quality assurance standards. The result, however, is a hand-printed pocket square with beautiful and versatile colorways that will ensure that you stand out from the crowd. Only a handful of modern silk printers possess the skills needed to operate traditional silk screens and Fort Belvedere sources its fabric from a heritage English company that produces only the highest quality printed fabrics.

  • Meticulously Hand-Rolled Edges

Although an expensive and time-consuming process, the edges of this Fort Belvedere pocket squares have been rolled by hand to ensure a neat and sophisticated look, in contrast to machine-made edges that are obviously so flat and regimented that they appear cheap. This edge treatment also improves the durability and longevity of the pocket square as it reinforces the areas of most regular wear and tear.
