Why You Should Wear Collar Jewelry

A defining style feature of the 1920s and 1930s, collar bars were regularly worn by well-dressed gentlemen during the Golden Age of Menswear to elevate their ties and craft unique, dashing looks. Revive this exceptional sartorial tradition with Fort Belvedere and our debonair collar bar, designed to be worn with a pinhole collar.

Hugely popular during the heyday of the Golden Age of Menswear in the Twenties and Thirties, collar jewelry has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity thanks to television shows like Boardwalk Empire and Mad Men. Even James Bond is wearing them!

Collar jewelry, like the collar bar featured here, is not only a distinctive accessory that adds unexpected visual interest and a dash of vintage flair. It also elevates and complements your tie knot and collar, adding new versatility and debonair charm to items already found in your wardrobe.

Rose Gold-Plated Collar Pin Hexagonal End

A defining style feature of the 1920s and 1930s, collar jewelry was regularly worn by well-dressed gentlemen during the Golden Age of Menswear to elevate their ties and craft unique, dashing looks. Revive this exceptional sartorial tradition with Fort Belvedere and our three varieties of collar jewelry:

The debonair bar style is designed to be worn with a pinhole collar.

The efficient safety-pin style can be worn with any classic collar.

The versatile clip style can be worn without the risk of damaging your shirts or the need for special collar holes.

Collar Pin in Rose Gold Plated Hexagonal End

Hugely popular during the heyday of the Golden Age of Menswears in the Twenties and Thirties, collar jewelry has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity thanks to television shows like Boardwalk Empire and Mad Men. Even James Bond is wearing them! To learn about all of the types of collar jewelry, including bars, pins, and clips, read our Collar Pin Guide.

Modeled after the humble safety pin, this collar pin is designed to work with a wide variety of collar types and was, for decades, a regular sight in menswear: historic gentlemen of style like Clark Gable and Fred Astaire wore one regularly, as did Leonardo di Caprio in the 2013 film adaptation of The Great Gatsby. If you are wearing a pinhole collar, the point will slip neatly through the premade holes and securely hold your collar tips. If your collar has no premade holes, the thin, sharp point will gently pass through the fabric of your collar, pinning both tips in place. To help you wear your collar pin with a wider range of collar types, Fort Belvedere offers this pin in three sizes: the shorter sizes will generally work best with classic collars, while the larger sizes are perfect for more modern widespread or medium cutaway collars.

Please note that extremely wide cutaway collar shirts should not be worn with collar jewelry and our pins will not fit them.

What makes this Fort Belvedere Collar Pin so special?

Solid Stainless Steel Construction. Built to last, this collar clip is fashioned out of durable stainless steel, unlike most of the cheap and hollow examples put out by other makers. Fabricated by skilled Austrian craftsmen, the workmanship on this pin far exceeds the quality of other collar pins on the market today. Each pin is also carefully plated in precious metal so that the best materials are used at every level of construction.

●   Noninvasive Point. Thick and bulky collar pins will slowly but surely poke your collar full of holes. To preserve your shirts, Fort Belvedere collar pins are made 25% thinner than our competitors’ pins. Our extra-sharp point glides easily in the fabric, leaving a minuscule hole that minimally impacts your shirt collar or its lining.

●   Perfectly Sized. To help you find the right collar jewelry for every collar type, we are happy to offer three sizes of collar pins: 50mm, 55mm, and 60mm. In general, the wider the gap between the collar points, the larger the pin required. Consider buying all three sizes, and you will be able to match your collar jewelry to collars ranging from a classic point to a medium cutaway.

●   Stays in Place. Most collar pins available today are poorly proportioned, meaning that the pin will hang down lankly when worn or fail to provide a neat hold between the tips of your collar. Fort Belvedere has designed this pin according to the scale typical of vintage examples, ensuring a dapper look that perfectly elevates your tie knot when the pin is properly sized to the collar.

●   Warm Rose Gold. Rich and decadent, lustrous rose gold imparts a warmth to your outfit that no other metal can. With an extra thick plating of 2 microns, this pin is designed to last and you need never worry about the plating rubbing off with regular wear. Pins of all sizes are also available in brilliant yellow gold and alluring platinum silver.

Spend More and Save. At Fort Belvedere, we want to reward you for shopping with us, not keep you waiting for gimmicky sales and price reductions. Therefore, the more you buy, the more you save. Buy any 4 collar pins for $100 or any 8 collar pins for $180.

Perfect Size & No Matter Your Tie or Collar:

We offer 3 lengths, measured including the ball ends:

     43mm / 1.69" - for small tie knots & narrow tie space

     47mm / 1.85" - for medium tie knots & narrow tie space

     51mm / 2.00" - for thicker ties & collars with a bit more spread

Make Sure Your Collar Bar Fits Your Collar

In order to wear a collar bar, you must own a shirt that comes with pin holes already present and your collar bar has to span the distance between those holes.

To determine the correct size for you, measure the distance between the holes on your collar with a ruler or measuring tape.

If the distance is between 35 and 38 mm, you want the 45mm collar bar.

If the distance is between 39 and 42 mm, you want the 49 mm collar bar.

For any distance over 42 mm, you want the 53 mm collar bar.

These distances will ensure that the collar bar is just tight enough to neatly hold the collar in place without distending your collar.

Jewelry That Gets Better with Age

With regular use, your Fort Belvedere jewelry should not require any special cleaning and will naturally develop a beautiful, subtle patina that imparts personality and uniqueness.

If desired, a quality precious metal cleaner can be used sparingly to bring out a brighter shine on the metal, but this is not necessary. All of our jewelry is sturdy enough that you can wear it without concern and can look forward to passing them on to your children or even grandchildren.

Collar Bars Made to Last

As a piece of jewelry that is regularly worn, it is paramount that your collar bar be made to last. That's why we decided to craft ours out of a solid base metal, either 925 sterling silver, brass, or stainless steel. Durable, pliable, and strong, a base metal was truly the best material for these collar pins as it won't wear down or break from the repetitive motion of screwing and unscrewing the end caps of this collar bar.

To give this collar bar a beautiful luster, we then thickly coated its body in a precious metal. Doing so imparts the incredible beauty of gold or platinum to this piece of jewelry without adversely affecting its functionality or durability. Thanks to the thick plating and our particular attention to quality, this collar bar appears as though it is made from solid gold or platinum and will elicit compliments from everyone who sees it.
