I’ve always been a normal tie-wearer, so branching out and trying something as different as a bow tie was a different experience. I felt I needed to make an investment that justified itself and this Fort Velvedere Silk Shatung Bow Tie did that and much else. I usually have a tendency to wear incorrect combinations or clashing styles, so I wanted to really correct that this time as our medical school “prom” even approached. I ended up receiving at least three compliments on the tie within the first hour. It even started spirited conversations regarding self-tying ties and not-so-stylish prefolded bow ties. Overall I caught onto the YouTube videos that have been published and immediately felt connected to the emphasis on quality and the objective truth that anything of true quality will always cost more. Fort Velvedere, along with Gentleman’s Gazette, all imbue Sven Raphael Schneider’s keen and precise eye for style and of course, quality. These realizations have made me realize that investing in quality items made of quality long-lasting material, will always be the better choice, and for that I say thank you very much.

Black Tie Etiquette

The black bow tie has famously given its name to the Black Tie Dress Code, but this accessory is also an essential requirement when wearing a tuxedo or dinner jacket ensemble. This neckwear will be appropriate for any formal evening dress code that includes the words "Black Tie." Its timeless butterfly bow type will frame your face perfectly and ensure you make a memorable impact.

Do not forget the other accessories typical of Black Tie. For the most elegant appearance, it is important to match the facings of your tuxedo to your accessories like neckwear. Therefore, if your dinner jacket has silk shantung on the lapels, you should have a bow tie in the same material. Be sure to select an appropriate waist covering, like a matching cummerbund, and consider a boutonniere as well: traditionally, gentlemen wore a rose or carnation with evening ensembles.

The Sensational Style of Shantung Silk

Because of its soft, somewhat rough matte appearance, shantung silk pairs elegantly with a variety of other materials and will complement tuxedos with a satin, barathea, shantung, or faille lapel. It also pairs well with white or off-white evening shirts, studs or traditional buttons, and either traditional waist covering, be it a formal vest or cummerbund.

Similar to a very fine faille, shantung is for gentlemen who want to stand out in a subtle, nonchalant way and mark themselves as genuine menswear experts.

Styled with prominent bows that are reminiscent of the wings of a butterfly, this bow tie has dimensions of approximately 4.75” by 2.5,” or 12 cm by 6.5 cm. It is one of the most common bow shapes for black tie neckwear and will appear visually pleasing with nearly every face shape and build.

Exceptional Silk Shantung

Black silk shantung is a type of fabric known for its distinctive texture, which is characterized by a rough, uneven surface. This texture is the result of using irregularly shaped raw silk fibers known as "dupioni," which are woven into the fabric. The silk's natural sheen combined with the fabric's nubby texture gives it a unique luster and depth.

Shantung silk is appreciated for its body and crispness, which allow it to hold shapes well. This makes it particularly popular for structured formal pieces. Despite its textured appearance, it remains relatively lightweight and breathable. Its elegance and durability make it a sought-after material for those looking to add a touch of luxury to their formal evening ensembles.

Sized for You

Your Fort Belvedere formal evening bow tie is individually sized, ensuring that no clunky fastening system or adjustable slides mar the elegant appearance of your neckwear.

In most cases, your bow tie size will be the same as your shirt collar size.

To find this size, simply measure your neck with measuring tape. The size you measure is the size of bow tie you should order.

If you are in-between sizes, choose the next size up if you like a big knot or down if you like a small know.

If your shirt collar is quite a bit bigger than your neck, choose the next larger size.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the relative thickness of the material used in our silk velvet bow ties, size up one half. For instance, if your neck measures 16”, please order a size 16.5.

Care

Cleaning

Silk and blended silk neckwear should not be washed immersed in water as doing so can ruin the texture and color of the silk. Instead, spot clean your neckwear using the following steps.

Gently blot any excess stain with a soft, dry cloth. Do not rub as this can damage the fabric.

Fill a small bowl with lukewarm water and add a few drops of mild detergent specifically designed for silk.

Dip a corner of a clean, white cloth into the solution and test it on a hidden area of the tie to ensure it doesn't cause discoloration.

If the test is successful, lightly dab the stained area with the dampened cloth. Use a gentle tapping motion and do not saturate the silk.

Moisten another clean cloth with plain lukewarm water and gently dab the area to remove any soap residue.

Pat the cleaned area with a dry cloth to absorb moisture, then leave the tie laid flat on a towel to air dry completely.

If the stain does not respond to the these steps, take the neckwear to a professional dry cleaner experienced in handling delicate garments.

Storage

To prevent heavy creasing, never store your neckwear tied or knotted.

Undo the knot and then roll the necktie up in a firm but not excessively tight coil.

Allow it to sit in the coil for about a day to relax wrinkles.

To prevent wrinkles, store your silk neckwear hanging, flat, or in a very loose roll.

What makes this Fort Belvedere silk shantung black tie so special?

Shantung is a silk plain weave fabric with a ribbed surface, owing to its long silk weft yarns. Unlike most other silks, shantung has characteristic raw silk fibers that are not uniform in width, but varying as to thickness and thinness. This produces an irregular look that is appreciated by elegant gentlemen and connoisseurs of the unique and wonderful around the globe.

Fort Belvedere uses a fine shantung silk that has an unexpected and somewhat roughened matte appearance, which attracts all the right attention in exactly the right way. Because the bow tie is self-tying, the quality of the material is put on full display with an unbroken, continuous neck that is perfectly sized to you, requiring no clunky and obstructing metal clasps. Individually-sized evening neckwear is increasingly rare nowadays, and stands out as the choice of all discerning gentlemen.

You will not find a better black bow tie in silk shantung anywhere else!

Details & Specs

Black Bow Tie in Silk Shantung Sized Butterfly Self Tie - Fort Belvedere
  • Rare Shantung Silk

The tumbled texture of genuine shantung can only be achieved with quality, expertly woven silk, which is why Fort Belvedere sourced the fabric for this bow tie from a renowned Italian silk mill. Although well-known during the Golden Age of Menswear, shantung silk is rarely seen in evening wear today, despite its famous pedigree. Also known as Dupioni Silk, shantung is a preferred material for the facings on bespoke dinner jackets.

  • Self-Tying Bow Tie

Pre-tied bow ties look clunky and juvenile, appearing overly artificial and being reminiscent of little boys. This bow tie is self-tying so you can craft your own desired knot and tightness to your exact wishes.

  • Individually Sized

To save money and effort, most formal bow ties on the market have an adjustable sizing clasp. Clunky hardwear can feel uncomfortable around your neck and will spoil the lines of your collar, especially if you are wearing a detachable wing collar. Fort Belvedere is one of the few modern makers that offers a fixed-sized bow tie, perfectly suited to your personal measurements, and made from a solid piece of fabric so that there are no unsightly seams or lumps.

  • Handmade from Superlative Silk

The perfect silky sheen can only be achieved with the perfect fabric, so Fort Belvedere has sourced only the finest luxurious silk from a renowned Italian silk mill. Almost all other bow ties utilize an inferior weft satin because it is cheaper to make, but it also results in an inferior luster.
