How to Style a Bow Tie

A perfectly symmetrical self-tied bow tie is almost impossible to achieve, and it too closely resembles the artificial appearance of a cheap-looking pre-tied bow tie. Therefore, take advantage of the spontaneity and unique look of a self-tied bow tie by embracing a nonchalant approach.

How so? Intentionally leave one end of the bow tie a little longer than the other, or one side higher than the other, for an organic, sprezzatura-inspired appearance. You can also vary the tightness or looseness of the knot for more formal or casual looks. The result is a bow tie that is definitively styled your way and that will fit your personality.

Red and Buff Paisley

Paisley patterns are so popular in menswear because they can appear formal or casual as needed. The organic lines provide a dandy effect while the repeating nature of the pattern creates pleasing order. Paisley is truly the best of all worlds when it comes to patterns.

The rich red and buff tones of the paisley pattern create a visually striking contrast, making this bow tie a perfect choice for formal events and sophisticated gatherings. Pair it with a crisp white dress shirt and a dark navy or charcoal suit to let the bow tie stand out as the centerpiece of your ensemble.

For a more creative and stylish approach, consider pairing the bow tie with a subtly patterned shirt or a blazer in complementary colors. The red and buff hues offer a versatile palette that can be matched with various shades of blue, gray, and even earthy tones. This flexibility allows you to experiment with different textures and patterns, creating a unique and personalized style statement.

In addition to formal settings, this bow tie can also be styled for more casual yet polished looks. Pair it with a light gray blazer and a patterned shirt for a smart-casual outfit that exudes confidence and charm. The timeless appeal of the paisley pattern, combined with the rich colors of red and buff, makes this bow tie a versatile accessory that can elevate any outfit.

An Ancient Dye of Historic Beauty

Madder silk is a mesmerizing and lustrous textile that has been held in high regard throughout the annals of time for its intensely rich hues. The name "madder" is derived from the Rubia tinctorum plant, also known as common madder or dyer's madder, which is the source of its natural and vibrant dyes.

Traditionally, natural madder root was renowned for yielding primarily red pigments; however, the evolution of modern dyeing techniques has expanded this spectrum to embrace a panopony of deep, saturated tones. Envision shades such as mustard yellow, forest green, burnt orange, profound blues and violets—and naturally, the classic reds and burgundies.

The very finest madder products, such as those we offer, are renowned for their unique texture and sheen, having been printed on twill silk fabric treated with gum arabic, conferring on them a distinct, matte finish known among connoisseurs as a "chalk hand."

Today, the artisans dedicated to crafting madder fabric might be fewer than in days past, yet select purveyors continue to uphold this sartorial tradition. The creation of madder silk is an intricate and labor-intensive art, entailing numerous stages of screen printing and necessitating only the finest quality silk. With a commitment to excellence, Fort Belvedere sources its revered ancient madder exclusively from England.

Care

Cleaning

Do not immerse your silk bow tie in water when cleaning, as doing so can ruin the texture and color of the silk. Instead, spot clean your neckwear using the following steps.

Gently blot any excess substance from the stain with a soft, dry cloth. Do not rub as this can damage the fabric.

Fill a small bowl with lukewarm water and add a few drops of mild detergent specifically designed for silk. Dip a corner of a clean, white cloth into the solution and test it on a hidden area of the neckwear to ensure it doesn't cause discoloration.

If the test is successful, lightly dab the stained area with the dampened cloth. Use a gentle tapping motion and do not saturate the silk.

Moisten another clean cloth with plain lukewarm water and gently dab the area to remove any soap residue.

Pat the cleaned area with a dry cloth to absorb moisture, then leave the tie laid flat on a towel to air dry completely.

If the stain does not respond to the these steps, take the tie to a professional dry cleaner experienced in handling silk garments.

Storage

After use, always untie your bow tie - do not leave it knotted, as this will work creases into the fabric.

Store your bow tie loose, either hanging up or lying flat: the choice is yours.

To prevent fading, store your neckwear in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.

Simple Adjustable Sizing

Your bow tie has an adjustable neck size, meaning that it can be altered to accommodate your desired fit and comfort.

Simply remove the metal t-bar from the sizing loop and increase or decrease the length of the bow tie as needed, reinserting the bar into the desired slot when you have found your desired size.

What makes this madder silk bow tie with paisley pattern so special?

The majority of modern bow ties come in only one or two boring styles with flimsy interlining and oversized, obtrusive proportions that were especially popular in the 1970s and 1990s.

Fort Belvedere, however, has revived the classic bow tie varieties that made the glorious 1930s a part of the Golden Age of Menswear, with smaller, neater bow ties that are subtle and sophisticated.

This bow tie is made from a plush ancient madder fabric that has the rich hues and unique chalky hand that sets that material apart. With its timeless organic paisley pattern, it will be the perfect addition to your neckwear collection.

Details & Specs

Pink Carnation, purple madder paisley bow tie and white linen pocke square by Fort Belvedere
  • Organic Paisley Pattern

The paisley pattern, a droplet-shaped motif with a curved upper end, has a history as rich and intricate as its design. Although named for the Scottish mill town of Paisley, its roots go all the way back to Persia. First popularized in the West during the 18th and 19th centuries, the paisley pattern is prized for its timelessness, versatility, and unique visual appeal, adding an organic flourish to any ensemble.

  • Hand-Printed Pattern

Printed on an artisanal screen in a process typical of Old World production, the colors of this pattern shine with an unusual brilliance that cannot be replicated by any other method.

  • Real Ancient Madder

Because of the complicated and expensive processes involved, only a handful of silk printers offer real ancient madder. Fort Belvedere has located such a maker in England, the home of artisanal real ancient madder production. To illustrate how complex and complicated this process is, consider the following: to dye with madder, the natural white base cloth must be outlined with a pattern and highlight colors applied only in the desired areas. Once the pattern printing is complete, the fabric is immersed in an indigo bath, staining the uncolored areas to the desired madder shade.

  • Unique Chalky Feel

In addition to its rich and deep colors, real madder is also typified by its distinctive, chalky feel. Extremely pleasing to the touch, this unique texture and the elegant drape it imparts are achieved by restoring to the silk fabric the natural gum that was stripped away during the production process. The result is one-of-a-kind silk that feels as good as it looks.

  • Handmade

Fort Belvedere ties are entirely sewn by hand, which gives them improved flexibility and designs that are functional as well as beautiful. This careful oversight allows us to offer exceptional products typified by the standards of Old World construction.

  • Perfect Bow Tie Size

When tied, this bow tie has classically proportioned dimensions of approx. 4" by 2" or 10 cm by 5 cm.

  • Classic Pointed Ends

One of the most classic shapes, this bow tie features the pointed ends that were typical for both social and business occasions during the Golden Age of Menswear.

  • Adjustable Sizing

Our sliding neck-size adjuster was designed to be
simple and easy to use, so you can achieve a custom fit to your exact
size with ease. When you are in a rush, you can even unhook the adjuster
clasp and leave the knot tied for convenience, although, for regular
wear, we do recommend untying the knot to avoid wrinkles and premature
    wear, and aging.
