The Prince of Wales Check Pattern

The Prince of Wales check, also known as glen check or glen plaid, Esterhazy, or Glen Urquhart, was not invented by Edward, the Duke of Windsor, but he wore it with such great elegance that it was quickly named after him.

Although the duke would usually wear black and white iterations of the pattern, there are many other color combinations available and Prince of Wales check is woven from colorful silk in a plain weave with tiny freckles of black that create a stunning tie.

Check Out This Shepherd's Style

This elegant day tie has been woven with a distinctive shepherd's check. Shepherd's check pattern is a simple, classic design that consists of a crossing pattern of intersecting vertical and horizontal stripes, traditionally in dark and light colors. This creates a distinctive checkered appearance reminiscent of Scottish plaids and is often associated with the clothing of shepherds, hence its name. The pattern is similar to gingham but typically features a twill weave and may be seen in various fabrics and garments.

Blue and red is a popular color combination in classic menswear because it offers a sharp contrast that is both visually striking and traditionally masculine. The cool tones of blue provide a calm, stable base, while the warm hues of red add a touch of energy and boldness, creating an ensemble that is balanced yet dynamic. Because both a cool and a warm tone is present, it is easy to introduce similar tonal colors as well as complementary colors This pairing also allows for versatility in patterns and textures, making it a timeless choice for men's style.

Decadent Silk with a Dignified Pattern

We searched out a heritage silk mill in Italy to produce the fabric for this neckwear. Silk from a small, high-end weaver in Italy offers numerous benefits. The exclusivity of the material ensures that each piece is unique, often reflecting the artisanal expertise and centuries-old weaving traditions of the region. High-quality Italian silk is renowned for its superior strength, natural sheen, and softness, which contribute to both its luxurious feel and durability. Additionally, purchasing from a smaller producer supports local craftsmanship and provides a level of customization and attention to detail that mass-produced fabrics can't match. This bespoke approach to fabric creation allows for a more sustainable production process, with an emphasis on quality over quantity, and often results in a product that is as much a piece of art as it is a textile.

Silk neckwear with a classic check pattern offer a sophisticated blend of style and functionality. Check is a classic design that exudes elegance and can easily be paired with various suit colors and styles, making it a versatile addition to any wardrobe. This iconic pattern also adds a touch of heritage and refinement, distinguishing the wearer in both business and social settings. Its silk material provides a luxurious sheen and smooth texture, ensuring a polished look for any formal occasion. Additionally, silk's natural properties allow the neckwear to hold its shape and resist wrinkles throughout the day.

Sized To Fit You

Almost all retailers sell their ties as one-size-fits-all. A handful offer neckties that are either longer or shorter. At Fort Belvedere, we cater to the needs of every man, whether of modest, average, or above-average height, which is why we are proud to offer neckties in three distinct sizes.

The dimensions of our neckties are proportional to your height.

SHORT: For those who are 5’8” or 173 cm or shorter.

REGULAR: For those between 5'9" or 175 cm and 6'2" or 188 cm.

LONG: For those who are 6’3” or 190 cm or taller.

If you prefer to wear trousers with a higher rise and are in-between sizes, it may be better to size down so that the necktie does not fall below your waistband when tied.

Available Self-Tipped or Untipped

Based on size, some of our ties are Self-Tipped or Untipped.

Self-tipped ties have a lining as part of their tips. The overwhelming majority of tie makers use a less expensive fabric for the tip in a bid to save money, but doing so compromises on the look and the functionality of the tie. All self-tipped Fort Belvedere ties feature a generous piece of lining in the same fabric as the tie’s body for a consistent, quality-made look and feel that is in keeping with traditional self-tipped tie construction.

Fort Belvedere also offers untipped ties in which the tips are carefully hand-rolled for a beautiful look and secure finish that requires more skill to achieve than a self-tipped tie. Because they have less fabric, untipped ties are also lighter. Untipped ties were very popular in the 1930s, and as a tribute to the styling conventions of that era, Fort Belvedere untipped ties have a vintage flared end.

Care

Cleaning

Silk and blended silk neckwear should not be washed immersed in water as doing so can ruin the texture and color of the silk. Instead, spot clean your neckwear using the following steps.

Gently blot any excess stain with a soft, dry cloth. Do not rub as this can damage the fabric.

Fill a small bowl with lukewarm water and add a few drops of mild detergent specifically designed for silk.

Dip a corner of a clean, white cloth into the solution and test it on a hidden area of the tie to ensure it doesn't cause discoloration.

If the test is successful, lightly dab the stained area with the dampened cloth. Use a gentle tapping motion and do not saturate the silk.

Moisten another clean cloth with plain lukewarm water and gently dab the area to remove any soap residue.

Pat the cleaned area with a dry cloth to absorb moisture, then leave the tie laid flat on a towel to air dry completely.

If the stain does not respond to the these steps, take the neckwear to a professional dry cleaner experienced in handling delicate garments.

Storage

To prevent heavy creasing, never store your neckwear tied or knotted.

Undo the knot and then roll the necktie up in a firm but not excessively tight coil.

Allow it to sit in the coil for about a day to relax wrinkles.

To prevent wrinkles, store your silk neckwear hanging, flat, or in a very loose roll.

Details & Specs

Rolled Prince of Wales Glen Check Silk Tie in Burgundy White - Fort Belvedere
  • Distinguished Prince of Wales Glen Check

Prince of Wales Check features a woven twill design of small and large checks, usually in muted colors or black and white. The colors are arranged with two dark and two light stripes alternating with four dark and four light stripes, which creates a crossing pattern of irregular checks. This pattern was favored by both King Edward VII and King Edward VIII when they were, respectively, Prince of Wales.

  • Handmade

Fort Belvedere ties are entirely sewn by hand, which gives them improved flexibility and designs that are functional as well as beautiful. This careful oversight allows us to offer exceptional products typified by the standards of Old World construction.

  • Signature 3-Ply Silk Yarn

Fort Belvedere uses sturdy 3-ply silk yarn in the hand sewing of our neckties, which gives the neckties improved wear and longevity. The thickness of the yarn makes the entire product more durable but thanks to the lightness of the material, no bulk is added.

  • 3-Fold Construction

Many ties are made with an unlined 6- or 7-fold construction that is soft and flimsy, causing lank, unappealing knots and a wrinkled tie. Fort Belvedere neckties are 3-fold constructed with a simple wool interlining, improving the overall structure and drape of the tie while allowing for fantastic knots. The discerning eye may notice the lining visible through the open pores, creating the impression of a solid tie with a sophisticated twist that will impress genuine clothing aficionados.

  • Available Tipped or Untipped

  • Perfectly Sized Ties

On formal occasions, every detail must be exactly correct, and this applies as well to the length of your neckwear. This necktie is available in three different sizes so that you can pick the necktie that is perfectly proportioned to you.
