Fort Belvedere has christened this model of trousers the “Stancliffe,” evocative of a stately English manor house secluded amongst verdant trees and rolling hills, redolent with a life of ease, sport, and gentlemanly pursuits.
Maroon Corduroy = Statement Piece
Red can be difficult to integrate into the larger pieces of your ensemble like jackets and trousers. Maroon, with its darker, sedate appearance, is an ideal way to introduce this vibrant shade into your wardrobe without becoming overwhelming. Either as a statement piece or a staple, these maroon trousers will make an excellent addition that will add visual interest to your menswear collection.
Combining Maroon Corduroy with Shoes and Socks
Trousers in red tones pair most easily with socks that have some shade of red in them: you will have no trouble helping these trousers stand out with socks that combine red and gray, red and blue, or red and navy. Warm tones provide another easy avenue for harmony: pinks, yellows, and oranges are all available for consideration, but be aware that the results can be very dramatic and are more suited for casual ensembles.
When it comes to cooler colors, higher-contrast blues that are either very dark or very light provide the visual pop necessary to keep up with this bright shade of red. Medium grays are also an unexpected option that offers great results. Similarly, light or dark shades of green can also appear very elegant.
Maroon trousers have the benefit of being able to pair well with nearly all leather colors and textures. With black they look dramatic, with tan they look casual, with shades of red they look mysterious, and with browns they look more sedate. Be aware that certain darker shades of red leathers, like maroon leather, especially in smooth textured leathers, can appear somewhat muddy. Rely, therefore, on higher contrast socks to break up their appearance.
Boots + Corduroys = Winner!
Boots, especially boots with contrast elements like suede, are always an excellent companion to corduroy because of the intersection of transitional-weather seasonality and unexpected texture. These trousers will appear elegant with a wide range of boots, from any shade of brown to black, and even to more unusual shades like reds, grays, and some blues: we’ve had particular success with buff suede ankle boots, believe it or not!
Summer Shoes + Corduroys = Faux Pas
In general, be wary of pairing corduroy with hot-weather footwear. As a rule of thumb, the fabric is simply too heavy for use with any style of shoe with which you might wear no-show socks.
Outfit Ideas for Maroon Corduroys
What better way to highlight the fun, casual potential of these trousers than with a red and white checked shirt. For visual weight, consider dark cognac shoes, perhaps monk straps for visual interest, and red and navy socks for a smooth transition between the elements.
For a plush and comfortable look, let’s take a buff sweater with tartan detailing as the centerpiece of our next ensemble. We’ll add a neutral off-white linen shirt and dark red and green tie. We’ll finish the look with tan suede oxfords and two-toned khaki and dark red socks.
To dress up the look, we’ll take our off-white linen shirt and dark red and green tie and add a dark navy sport coat with yellow window paning. A light blue boutonniere adds a flash of color and a red and dark green pocket square harmonizes the jacket with the trousers. The darker tones transition into tan suede oxfords through two-toned khaki and dark red socks.
Dark navy sweater to balance out the maroon trousers and harmonize the two with red and blue socks. Dark brown boots ground the entire ensemble.
In general, the weight of corduroy requires a certain balance between your upper and lower half which is easily accomplished by layering. The simple addition of a sport coat will go far in making an outfit with corduroy look exceptional: focus in particular on textured fabrics, such as tweed, that will contrast while harmonizing with the cords of the trousers. Be wary, however, of hot-weather textured fabrics like seersucker, which is too seasonally incongruous to wear with corduroy.
You can achieve a similar effect with knitwear, such as a tennis sweater in the warmer months or cardigan in the cooler: add a scarf during colder weather to ensure that your upper half is as insulated as your lower.
