The Benefits of a Wool Necktie

A necktie made from wool challis offers a unique combination of benefits, thanks to the distinctive qualities of the fabric. Wool challis is known for its soft texture, providing a comfortable, lightweight feel that is perfect for all-day wear. Additionally, wool is naturally wrinkle-resistant, ensuring that the tie maintains its crisp appearance throughout the day.

The matte finish of wool challis lends an understated elegance to your ensemble, making it a versatile choice that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Furthermore, wool challis holds dye well, offering rich, deep colors that are less prone to fading over time, ensuring that your tie remains a vibrant accessory in your wardrobe for years to come.

Fort Belvedere Wool Challis Tie in Yellow and Dark Green with pattern - Handmade by Fort Belvedere

Sunny Yellow and Brilliant Blue

The body of this necktie consists of a bright sunflower yellow in a tone designed to be as versatile as possible. Additional visual interest is added with the architectural motif detailing in brilliant blue, with cool green and warm red accents.

As it is made from wool, this tie is ideally suited to transitional seasons and cool temperatures. It will pair well with jackets in any color, but will look especially dapper with navy, medium gray, and lighter-toned jackets: any blue element will cause the blue detailing on the tie to pop marvelously.

When selecting colors to accent your accessories, such as your pocket square or your socks, consider shades of royal blue, ash gray, cream, burnt orange, olive green, forest green, burgundy, and teal.

Sensationally Soft Wool Challis

First popularized in the 19th century, the fine hand and muted colors of wool challis has made it a hit with stylish gentlemen ever since! The term challis is derived from the Anglo-Indian word "Shalee", which means soft. When this soft fabric was first introduced in Norwich, England in 1832, it was an immediate hit and quickly became a preferred fabric of the upper classes.

Today, wool challis is worn with both warm and cool weather ensembles and is a great alternative to madder silk or jacquard. Bright and bold colors add pop to casual outfits, while more sedate colors and patterns are perfectly acceptable as part of more formal business wear.

Care

Cleaning

Wool challis neckwear should not be washed immersed in water as doing so can ruin the texture and color of the fabric. Instead, spot clean your neckwear using the following steps.

Gently blot any excess substance from the stain with a soft, dry cloth. Do not rub as this can damage the fabric.

Fill a small bowl with lukewarm water and add a few drops of mild detergent specifically designed for wool, such as Woolite.

Dip a corner of a clean, white cloth into the solution and test it on a hidden area of the neckwear to ensure it doesn't cause discoloration.

If the test is successful, lightly dab the stained area with the dampened cloth. Use a gentle tapping motion and do not saturate the fabric.

Moisten another clean cloth with plain lukewarm water and gently dab the area to remove any soap residue. Pat the cleaned area with a dry cloth to absorb moisture, then leave the neckwear laid flat on a towel to air dry completely.

If the stain does not respond to the these steps, take the neckwear to a professional dry cleaner experienced in handling delicate accessories.

Storage

To prevent heavy creasing, never store your neckwear tied or knotted.

Undo the knot and then roll the necktie up in a firm but not excessively tight coil.

Allow it to sit in the coil for about a day to relax wrinkles.

To prevent wrinkles, store your neckwear hanging, flat, or in a very loose roll.

Sized To Fit You

Almost all retailers sell their ties as one-size-fits-all. A handful offer neckties that are either longer or shorter. At Fort Belvedere, we cater to the needs of every man, whether of modest, average, or above-average height, which is why we are proud to offer neckties in three distinct sizes.

The dimensions of our neckties are proportional to your height.

SHORT: For those who are 5’8” or 173 cm or shorter.

REGULAR: For those between 5'9" or 175 cm and 6'2" or 188 cm.

LONG: For those who are 6’3” or 190 cm or taller.

If you prefer to wear trousers with a higher rise and are in-between sizes, it may be better to size down so that the necktie does not fall below your waistband when tied.

Available Self-Tipped or Untipped

Based on size, some of our ties are Self-Tipped or Untipped.

Self-tipped ties have a lining as part of their tips. The overwhelming majority of tie makers use a less expensive fabric for the tip in a bid to save money, but doing so compromises on the look and the functionality of the tie. All self-tipped Fort Belvedere ties feature a generous piece of lining in the same fabric as the tie’s body for a consistent, quality-made look and feel that is in keeping with traditional self-tipped tie construction.

Fort Belvedere also offers untipped ties in which the tips are carefully hand-rolled for a beautiful look and secure finish that requires more skill to achieve than a self-tipped tie. Because they have less fabric, untipped ties are also lighter. Untipped ties were very popular in the 1930s, and as a tribute to the styling conventions of that era, Fort Belvedere untipped ties have a vintage flared end.

These numerous elements also introduce many opportunities for additional colorways that make coordination with the rest of your ensemble all the simpler.

Details & Specs

Wool Challis Tie in Sunflower Yellow with Green,Blue & Red Pattern & Edelweiss Butonniere - Fort Belvedere
  • Diamond, Quatrefoil, and Laurel Motif Pattern

Like a Venetian gothic palace or a Renaissance Revival mansion, this tie has been festooned with architectural elements typical of Antiquity and the Late Middle Ages. Not only do these elements excite attention and make this tie all the more memorable, they also help to add structure and cohesion to the rest of your ensemble, as these varied figurations will emphasize similar designs in the rest of your outfit.

  • Decadent Wool Challis Fabric

Sourced from a heritage mill in England, this accessory is made from 100% wool challis. First popularized in the early 19th century, wool challis is a type of fabric that, despite being woven, has a soft and smooth texture. Its colors tend to be rich yet subdued, as opposed to vivid hues. While it is crafted from wool, challis distinguishes itself from the denser, heavier types of woolen textiles with its extremely plush and gentle hand.

  • Hand-Printed Wool Challis

Traditionally, wool challis fabric was hand-block printed, a labor-intensive process that is not economically feasible today. Instead, modern wool challis fabrics are screen printed. To capture the best of the old and the new methods, Fort Belvedere accessories are screen printed by hand, lending the production process an Old-World charm.

  • Handmade

Fort Belvedere ties are entirely sewn by hand, which gives them improved flexibility and designs that are functional as well as beautiful. This careful oversight allows us to offer exceptional products typified by the standards of Old World construction.

  • 3-Fold Construction

Many ties are made with an unlined 6- or 7-fold construction that is soft and flimsy, causing lank, unappealing knots and a wrinkled tie. Fort Belvedere neckties are 3-fold constructed with a simple wool interlining, improving the overall structure and drape of the tie while allowing for fantastic knots. The discerning eye may notice the lining visible through the open pores, creating the impression of a solid tie with a sophisticated twist that will impress genuine clothing aficionados.

  • Signature 3-Ply Silk Yarn

Fort Belvedere uses sturdy 3-ply silk yarn in the hand sewing of our neckties, which gives the neckties improved wear and longevity. The thickness of the yarn makes the entire product more durable but thanks to the lightness of the material, no bulk is added.

  • Perfectly Sized Ties

On formal occasions, every detail must be exactly correct, and this applies as well to the length of your neckwear. This necktie is available in three different sizes so that you can pick the necktie that is perfectly proportioned to you.

  • Available Tipped or Untipped
