How to Style a Bow Tie

A perfectly symmetrical self-tied bow tie is almost impossible to achieve, and it too closely resembles the artificial appearance of a cheap-looking pre-tied bow tie. Therefore, take advantage of the spontaneity and unique look of a self-tied bow tie by embracing a nonchalant approach.

How so? Intentionally leave one end of the bow tie a little longer than the other, or one side higher than the other, for an organic, sprezzatura-inspired appearance. You can also vary the tightness or looseness of the knot for more formal or casual looks. The result is a bow tie that is definitively styled your way and that will fit your personality.

Autumn Excellence with Wool Challis

Although light enough to serve as a three-seasons material, wool challis shines especially well in the cooler and colder months. This particular bow tie has been designed with fall colors in mind, featuring a rich olive green with red and orange detailing in the form of macclesfield neats.

When building an outfit around this bow tie, consider pairing the bow tie with a crisp white dress shirt; this will allow the colors of the pattern to stand out without competing with any other hues. A navy blue suit or sports coat would serve as an excellent backdrop, providing a classic and professional canvas that enhances the sophisticated nature of the wool challis fabric.

For a more casual but equally stylish approach, you might opt for a beige or light brown blazer, which would resonate well with the earthy tones of the olive green. When selecting trousers, charcoal grey or khaki are advisable choices that maintain the balance of the outfit. It's important to avoid overly busy or brightly colored pants that could clash with the intricate Macclesfield Neats pattern.

In terms of accessories, a simple pocket square in a complementary color, such as burnt orange or a subdued red, can add a touch of elegance without overwhelming the look.

Remember that the texture of the wool challis lends itself to cooler weather, so consider reserving this bow tie for fall or winter occasions.

Simple Adjustable Sizing

Your bow tie has an adjustable neck size, meaning that it can be altered to accommodate your desired fit and comfort.

Simply remove the metal t-bar from the sizing loop and increase or decrease the length of the bow tie as needed, reinserting the bar into the desired slot when you have found your desired size.

Care

Cleaning

Wool challis neckwear should not be washed immersed in water as doing so can ruin the texture and color of the fabric. Instead, spot clean your neckwear using the following steps.

Gently blot any excess substance from the stain with a soft, dry cloth. Do not rub as this can damage the fabric.

Fill a small bowl with lukewarm water and add a few drops of mild detergent specifically designed for wool, such as Woolite.

Dip a corner of a clean, white cloth into the solution and test it on a hidden area of the neckwear to ensure it doesn't cause discoloration.

If the test is successful, lightly dab the stained area with the dampened cloth. Use a gentle tapping motion and do not saturate the fabric.

Moisten another clean cloth with plain lukewarm water and gently dab the area to remove any soap residue. Pat the cleaned area with a dry cloth to absorb moisture, then leave the neckwear laid flat on a towel to air dry completely.

If the stain does not respond to the these steps, take the neckwear to a professional dry cleaner experienced in handling delicate accessories.

Storage

To prevent heavy creasing, never store your neckwear tied or knotted.

Undo the knot and then roll the necktie up in a firm but not excessively tight coil.

Allow it to sit in the coil for about a day to relax wrinkles.

To prevent wrinkles, store your neckwear hanging, flat, or in a very loose roll.

Sensationally Soft Wool Challis

First popularized in the 19th century, the fine hand and muted colors of wool challis has made it a hit with stylish gentlemen ever since! The term challis is derived from the Anglo-Indian word "Shalee", which means soft. When this soft fabric was first introduced in Norwich, England in 1832, it was an immediate hit and quickly became a preferred fabric of the upper classes.

Today, wool challis is worn with both warm and cool weather ensembles and is a great alternative to madder silk or jacquard. Bright and bold colors add pop to casual outfits, while more sedate colors and patterns are perfectly acceptable as part of more formal business wear.

What makes this wool challis bow tie with macclesfield neats pattern so special?

Although introduced in Norwich, England in 1832 as a favored alternative to worsted wool or silk for the upper-class gentry, wool challis is extremely rare in menswear today, especially in the realm of neckwear. Therefore, you can be sure that you will be one of only a few gentlemen sporting this refined and elegant fabric, which can typically only be found at the most elite haberdashers.

Wool Challis is an impeccable material for bow ties
because it naturally resists wrinkles, holds color beautifully, and is
exquisitely soft: the name challis is, in fact, derived from the
Anglo-Indian word shalee, which means soft!

Details & Specs

When worn Wool Challis Bow Tie in Brown with Green, Blue, Red & Yellow Pattern - Fort Belvedere
  • Timeless Macclesfield Neats Pattern

A Macclesfield Neats pattern is a classic and refined textile design characterized by its small, intricate geometric shapes, often resembling tiny flowers or neat dots. This pattern is traditionally associated with men's silk ties and is named after the town of Macclesfield in England, which was once a hub for silk weaving. The Macclesfield Neats pattern exudes sophistication and is a timeless choice for formal attire, adding a touch of elegance and understated flair to any outfit.

  • Hand-Printed Wool Challis

Traditionally, wool challis fabric was hand-block printed, a labor-intensive process that is not economically feasible today. Instead, modern wool challis fabrics are screen printed. To capture the best of the old and the new methods, Fort Belvedere accessories are screen printed by hand, lending the production process an Old-World charm.

  • Handmade

Fort Belvedere ties are entirely sewn by hand, which gives them improved flexibility and designs that are functional as well as beautiful. This careful oversight allows us to offer exceptional products typified by the standards of Old World construction.

  • Classic Pointed Ends

One of the most classic shapes, this bow tie features the pointed ends that were typical for both social and business occasions during the Golden Age of Menswear.

  • Perfect Bow Tie Size

When tied, this bow tie has classically proportioned dimensions of approx. 4" by 2" or 10 cm by 5 cm.

  • Adjustable Sizing

Our sliding neck-size adjuster was designed to be
simple and easy to use, so you can achieve a custom fit to your exact
size with ease. When you are in a rush, you can even unhook the adjuster
clasp and leave the knot tied for convenience, although, for regular
wear, we do recommend untying the knot to avoid wrinkles and premature
    wear, and aging.
