MADDER SILK

Madder ties have been gracing the necks of menswear connoisseurs for centuries, and it isn’t difficult to make a great impression when your neckwear radiates pure class and elegance with the rich yet subtle colors typical of madder dyes.

Popularized during the 19th century, madder silk is famed for its plush, decadent colors and unique, tactile hand. Genuine madder silk, however, is increasingly difficult to find nowadays, but Fort Belvedere was able to secure a supply from a heritage silk mill operating in England.

Originally, madder was sourced from alizarin dyes made by grinding up the roots of the Rubua Rubiaceae plant. Then, following innovations made in the 1860s, this dye could be reproduced chemically. Today, all madder colors are produced chemically, but the name remains the same.

Real Ancient Madder. Because of the complicated and expensive processes involved, only a handful of silk printers offer real ancient madder. Fort Belvedere has located such a maker in England, the home of artisanal real ancient madder production. To illustrate how complex and complicated this process is, consider the following: to dye with madder, the natural white base cloth must be outlined with a pattern and highlight colors applied only in the desired areas. Once the pattern printing is complete, the fabric is immersed in an indigo bath, staining the uncolored areas to the desired madder shade.

Unique Chalky Feel. In addition to its rich and deep colors, real madder is also typified by its distinctive, chalky feel. Extremely pleasing to the touch, this unique texture and the elegant drape it imparts are achieved by restoring to the silk fabric the natural gum that was stripped away during the production process. The result is one-of-a-kind silk that feels as good as it looks.

3-Fold Construction. Many ties are made with an unlined 6- or 7-fold construction that is soft and flimsy, causing lank, unappealing knots and a wrinkled tie. Fort Belvedere neckties are 3-fold constructed with a simple wool interlining, improving the overall structure and drape of the tie while allowing for fantastic knots. The discerning eye may notice the lining visible through the open pores, creating the impression of a solid tie with a sophisticated twist that will impress genuine clothing aficionados.

Handmade. Fort Belvedere ties are entirely sewn by hand, which gives them improved flexibility and designs that are functional as well as beautiful. Our lined ties have an interlining of merino wool that is wonderfully soft while also giving the necktie improved structure and drape, ensuring full, elegant knots.

Signature 3-Ply Silk Yarn. Fort Belvedere uses sturdy 3-ply silk yarn from Germany in the hand sewing of our neckties, which gives the neckties improved wear and longevity. The silk yarn is also in our distinctive shade of forest green for a unique and unexpected style cue. Perfectly Sized. This necktie is available in three different sizes so that you can pick the necktie that is perfectly proportioned to you.

Size

Almost all retailers sell their ties as one-size-fits-all. A handful offer neckties that are either longer or shorter. At Fort Belvedere, we cater to the needs of every man, whether of modest, average, or above-average height, which is why we are proud to offer neckties in three distinct sizes.

SHORT: For those who are 5’8” or 173 cm or shorter.
REGULAR: For those who are around 5’11 or 180 cm tall.
LONG: For those who are 6’3” or 190 cm or taller.

Please note that if you prefer to wear trousers with a higher rise and are in-between sizes, it may be better to size down so that the necktie does not fall below your waistband when tied.
